Qualifications:
Ministry Philosophy “For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” -1st Corinthians 2:2 The heartbeat of our student ministry is the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Student Pastor’s role in a small church is in many ways an evangelistic disciple-maker. That means he should consistently and faithfully proclaim Christ crucified, risen, and reigning. This philosophy means: We want our student ministry to be the best part of the week for teenagers; a place where they meet their friends to learn, worship, and have fun together through Christ-centered community. Students in our church are taught to orient their lives around a desire to first know Jesus and enjoy His presence. Everything we do (games, music, events, teaching) should flow out of a deep conviction and joy from knowing Jesus as Lord. We are here to partner with parents as their student grows into a disciple of Jesus. Lifestyle Expectations Student Pastors often serve in the role of a student ministry leader while not necessarily being a Pastor/Elder to the whole congregation. However, we would like for someone in this role to have the hope of eventually becoming an Elder able to lead the church as a whole. For this reason, we are looking for our candidate who is qualified to one day oversee the flock according to scripture. The qualifications for that role is found in 1st Timothy 3:1-7: [1] The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. [2] Therefore an overseer must be above reproach , the husband of one wife , sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach , [3] not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money .* [4] He must manage his own household well , with all dignity keeping his children submissive, [5] for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? [6] He must not be a recent convert , or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. [7] Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders *, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. (ESV) v1 Must desire the office of pastor/elder/overseer. v2 Must demonstrate excellent Christian character. v2 Must be unmarried, or currently married to his first and only wife. v2 Must be respected as a teacher. v3 Must have an easy temperament, not prone to vice of money or pride. v4-5 Must disciple his own household. We cannot expect anyone to have a perfect family, but we do expect our pastors to be actively leading their family spiritually. v6 Must not be a new believer who sees his role as a status symbol. v7 Must not have an ongoing public record of misconduct (whether among our community or the state) which would disqualify him from ministry. . Expectations From Our Local Church Besides those expectations given in Scripture, we as a church, ask that the student pastor satisfy these expectations as well: Be an active member of First Baptist Church of Beverly Hills, FL Model a Christ-centered life and lead students by example Safeguard our children and congregation by every means possible from abuse, both real and apparent.
