What does it mean to be Holy? But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." 1 Peter 1:15-16
Have you ever done something just because it was trendy? Maybe you wear your hair in a specific style because girls from school wear it like that. It's easy to imitate others in life, but spiritually, God wants us to be more like Him. We have a call as believers to be different.
Holiness is a spiritual term that means our actions, words, and lives should look more like Jesus' life than the examples in the world around us.
In the Old Testament, God commanded His people, the Israelites, to be holy. He wanted them to be different from other nations, who lived selfishly. He wanted His people to behave differently because He is different.
Today we are still called to live like the Lord instead of trying to blend in with the world. Show kindness when the world shows hate. Be generous when others are greedy.
Ultimately, God's character defines holiness. He is perfect, pure, and powerful. Though we will not be perfect, the more we learn about Him, the more we will reflect Jesus' character.
It isn't always easy to act in a way that is holy. Sometimes, it feels a lot simpler to stay quiet when we do something wrong or put our needs above the needs of others. However, God's love gives us the strength to do what is right, to set an example for the people around us, and display His character.
